The girls basketball program at Calvary Christian Schools, thought
by many around the state to be a possible MHSAA state ranked team in
2012-13, just completed an incredibly successful Summer Individual
Skills Basketball Camp, and as guest speaker 6'9" Division I Basketball
Player and Basketball Basics instructor/owner Jim McGannon said: "No
camp in the West Michigan Area this summer will be this big with this
many kids, or as well run, as the CCS camp this week!"
Girls competed at a wide variety of skills and won
ribbons, certificates, and prizes. Repeating campers were told their
scores from the previous year(s). Every camper received a very cool,
designed T-Shirt commemorating the week and Calvary Christian Schools
girls basketball, as well as a regulation size and weight basketball.
Guest speakers also included former All American Jim McHugh, former All
American Coach Bradley Richards, and a special question and answer
time for the younger grades with our very own MHSAA Class D District
Championship and Regional Finalist Girls Basketball team! (Sweet 16 in
the MHSAA State Championships-see the program from the Breslin Center at
Michigan State University)
For a special surprise, on the last day of camp,
Coach Ron Jenkins, college coach from the nationally ranked Muskegon
Community College Jayhawks basketball team showed up and gave an
enthusiastic speech about "Keeping God First" as well as "Working Hard
at whatever you do, in the classroom and on the court!". Coach Jenkins
also talked about career goals and college plans with an
educational talk to the older group of girls (8th -12th). He was an
inspirational speaker for the young and older girls alike.
It was an outstanding week of basketball, with over 50
girls in attendance. Addditionally, there were a variety of girls at
our camp from outside the CCS school family attending as well, including
our valued home-school connections! Coach Richards was very, very
pleased with the way the Varsity Basketball players were excellent role
models and coaches to the Elementary/Jr. High campers, and with both
camps as a whole.
"I see many, many years ahead of outstanding girls
basketball teams coming out of Calvary Christian Schools due to the
quality of outstanding players, and the parents they represent, that I
see coming up in the younger grades. Go Eagles!"
-Coach Brad Richards
